The WPSS U15 group came very close to an international tournament win falling short on penalties in the final of the One Nation Cup on the tour of Japan.
After a successful pre tournament camp at J League club Kashiwa Reysol the WPSS boys hit the ground running in the tournament winning 4 games out of 4 to top pool play and qualify for the final.
Pool play wins over Sydney FC, Izmir (Turkey), Shonan Bellmare (Japan) and Luch Energiya (Russia) meant that the WPSS players had earnt the right to play in the Stadium of J League club Shonan Bellmare in the show piece final.
Despite taking the lead in extra time WPSS could not hold on and missed out on penalties after a huge effort against a powerful Russian side.
As always there were many highlights off the pitch as the U15’s got to visit former programme player and now J League star Michael Fitzgerald at his J League champion club Kawasaki Frontale. Fitzgerald was injured and not in the match day squad but that did not stop him spending time with his fellow kiwis and rolling out an access all areas experience at the clubs J League game against S – Pulse.
WPSS also enjoyed success at the end of tournament prize giving. Congratulations to Bukhosi Ngwenya (pictured above) for being named MVP and Jonah Pastiroff who was the golden boot and top goal scorer at the One Nation Cup 2018.
WPSS also picked up the prize for best team of the tournament both on and off the pitch.
