NZ U17 qualify for FIFA World Cup

New Zealand have qualified for the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in fine style, putting in an outstanding performance to beat Tahiti 4-1 in the semi-finals of the OFC U-16 Championship in the Solomon Islands.

Congratulations to WPSS elite school player Ryan Verney and elite school graduate Alex Paulsen who is now at the Wellington Phoenix Football Academy for helping the side book their ticket for the big tournament in Peru next year.

Coach Jose Figueira was understandably pleased with his charges, having earlier promised there was more to come from them in this tournament.

“I think we’ve seen very close to their best now,” he said.

“We’re obviously delighted to have earned that qualification and I think the biggest thing today was the personality shown by the boys. To put on a performance like that in such a big game was top class.”

New Zealand face the host nation next up in the grand final on Saturday 22nd September at 4 pm (NZT) with live coverage available via www.oceaniafootball.com
